How to get to Malmö

Getting to the Öresund area

The easiest way to Malmö is getting a flight to Copenhagen (Denmark) and a train (~15 minutes ride) from there to the Malmö (Triangeln station). Alternatively, there are cheap flights from a few European airports to Malmö Airport (MMX), too, and from there one should take a bus to Malmö (~30 minutes).

From Copenhagen Airport

Leave the baggage claim and customs and go through the SAS counters. Here there are machines, only accepting credit card, and a ticket office where you can buy tickets to Malmö. Make sure you are on the right platform and have a ticket before boarding the train. Get off the train at the second stop, Triangeln, and leave the station. Scandic Triangeln Hotel is just by the corner.

From Malmö Airport

Take the flygbuss toward Malmö and get off at the Triangeln station, Scandic Triangeln Hotel is just by the corner.

Visa requirements

There might be a couple of months of waiting time to get a Schengen Visa. Therefore it is recommended that you register well in advance and apply for your visa. A list of nationalities that require visa for entry to Sweden can be found here.

Invitation letters will be sent upon request only. Please send requests to HB2016 [at] esss [dot] se and include your name, affiliation, mailing address, and email address. Letters will be sent electronically unless a paper copy is requested.

Regional information

Official language

The language of the conference is English.

Climate and Clothing

Dress code during the conference is business casual and casual on the excursion. Contrary to common belief Sweden is not that cold; that is why ESS still needs a cryogenics system!

Malmö has a record high temperature of 33.2 ºC in July, but to keep expectations the average high is 23 ºC and the average low is 14 ºC. Average precipitation in July is ~60 mm, and the abundance of wind turbines around Malmö is a good sign that it is a reasonably windy city.

Tipping

Tipping in restaurants and bars is generally at 5-10%. Tipping taxi drivers is also a common practice.

Electricity

The voltage in Sweden is 230 V. European-style round two-pin plugs are in use.

HB2016 Anti-harassment Policy

HB2016 is dedicated to providing a harassment-free conference experience for everyone.  We do not tolerate harassment of conference participants in any form.  Conference participants violating this rule may be sanctioned or expelled from the conference without a refund at the discretion of the conference organisers.

Harassment includes:

  • offensive verbal comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion;
  • sexual images in public spaces;
  • deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording;
  • sustained disruption of talks or other events;

Participants asked to stop any harassing behaviour are expected to comply immediately.

Exhibitors in the Industrial Exhibition are also subject to the anti-harassment policy.  In particular, exhibitors should not use sexualised images, activities, or other material.  Booth staff (including volunteers) should not use sexualised clothing/uniforms/costumes, or otherwise create a sexualised environment.

If a participant engages in harassing behaviour, the conference organisers may take any action they deem appropriate, including warning the offender or expulsion from the conference with no refund. If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact a member of conference staff immediately.

Conference staff will be happy to help participants contact hotel/venue security or local law enforcement, provide escorts, or otherwise assist those experiencing harassment to feel safe for the duration of the conference.  We value your attendance.

We expect participants to follow these rules at all conference venues and conference-related social events.
