What to do in Malmö and surroundings

Welcome to Sweden

The third largest city in Sweden, Malmö came to prominence in the 14th century and this legacy remains in the half-timbered buildings of the medieval center Lilla Torg. Formerly part of Denmark, it joined Sweden in the 17th century, but the construction of a dramatic bridge across the Öresund Strait in 2000 forged strong links with Copenhagen. Malmö may have capitalized on its easy access to the Danish capital, but it has plenty to keep you on Swedish terrain, including plans to become a world leader in environmentally sustainable living.

Culture in Malmö

The Malmö Art Museum (Malmö Konstmuseum), Stadsmuseum (City Museum), the Museum of Natural History and the Science and Maritime House Museum are all housed in Malmöhus Castle.

At a different location but well worth the visit: Moderna Museet Malmö. It is the only museum north of Amsterdam with an international art collection covering the entire 20th century with modern art works and photography from greats such as Picasso, Dalí, Matisse, Kandinsky and Rauschenberg.

Beaches

Located in the Skåne region of south Sweden, Malmö's climate varies from average temperatures of around 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees Celsius) in July and August, to around 38 degrees F (3 degrees Celsius) between December and February, making summer the best time to visit Malmö's 1.5-mile Ribersborg beach. Sometimes referred to as "Scandinavia's Copacabana," it's a short walk from downtown and popular with families but also has a designated nudist beach, as well as an area for dogs. The shallow water is suitable for paddling, but walk along the wooden pier to the Kallbadhus and you can enjoy saltwater swimming as well as a wood-fired sauna. A second beach, located in the Western Harbor, is covered with deck chairs and attracts a young crowd that retreats to the trendy cafes surrounding Calatrava's 54-story Turning Torso skyscraper. Summer is also best for boat rides along Malmö's inland canals and for picnics in Kungsparken, the city's oldest public park. For more information click here.
